Merry Christmas! Happy Festivus!

So heres my Chrsitmas card to you my dear readers, this ones for you! So today has been a great day, spent with family and friends. I hope yours was as good as mine! Two days ago we had our tenth annual festivus party, this year in the feats of strength I managed to make it into the finals against 9 time champion Gary Patrick. I thought I was doing well, I had him slightly over and had turned my shoulder, Gary looked at me and said, "are you ready?" Next thing I knew the table was over and we had a ten time festivus champion.... Today when sketching I wondered how the feats would go with my characters. Ray got a rough first round draw...prolly karma.
Merry Christmas and happy festivus everyone!

The Joss Whedon centric post. With a lil BSG.

Heres that Jayne dude from Firefly. Man I love the Whedon. I wish this show got more time cause it was pretty tight. THe film was definitly the best scifi film in 2005 {I think thats when it came out} and Im not sure if theres been any films that would match it since. If you can think of any that I might of missed let me know, as I love the sci fi.
Speaking of I watched Star ship troopers 3 the other day. Its hilarious.
Anyways, look for more pinups from me in the coming weeks, as you aint seeing no Jim and Jenn. Which by the way continues to chug along. I keep adding scenes. Im a masochist.
Also heres part one of a Battlestar Galatica two parter "auto-bile" comic that costars the powers of whedon. I did this first part prolly in april or soemthing..I may not ever finish this as the second part isnt as topical as it would of been when I did the first part...it was all about how long the wait between season 4.1 and 4.2 was to be..ironically not as long as the wait for the second part of this comic...FOREVER!!

Kaneda and reaction to that Steven Grant fella.

So if your not aware yet and you pay any attention to the comics media you soon will be...
http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=19027
Steven Grant in his Permenant Damage article this week serves up his year in review 2008. Dreary. His main thrust is a lack of original ideas, that although we may of seen this year the best superman story ever, its still just a super man story. I suggest you read it, its a good article, very polarizing.
My thoughts on the article, it seems to be very DC Marvel centric. Comics may not be in a golden age but compared to any time before other than the kirby glory years or the two years that saw watchmen and dark night come out we're doing pretty freaking good. We have to remember when slogging through the newest civil war or final crisis that despite the lows of the popular superhero titles we're still in the primes of careers of some of the most exciting comics talents ever. Bryan Lee O Malley, Paul Pope, James Jean, Becky Cloonan, Faith Erin Hocks are all names that are in varying degrees of becoming household. World builders all of them. Mentioning those five is just the top of the top, any indie comics show or zine show will introduce you to any number of exciting new artist whose last ambition is to write spiderman for the rest of thier lives{not that theres anything wrong with that}. If thats not enough new and exciting for you, look to the web. Achewood, Perry Bible, Katie Beaton, Dinosaur comics, Transmission X, Scary go round, XKCD octopus pie..the list goes on and on.
Im onside with steven Grant when I go into the beguiling and I have to fight through eighteen tie in issues of secret invasion to find the newest invincible but saying that shows that with all the bad theres hope. I feel good about comics. So should you.

Having said all of that maybe I should of expanded those few years that saw Watchmen and dark knight come out to include the better part of the eighties which is how long it took to finish Akira. Katsuhiro Otomo finished two full length stories before heading into animation, Domu and Akira. Both deal with psychic powers and both are huge influences for me as will be seen in my newest book. Here is of course the protaginist of Akira, Kaneda.
Keep on keeping on Comics!

John Romita Sr is allllllright!

So this is a panel from the new book...I wont be using that exact dialouge but I figured I would give you my viewers a clue to the homage if you didnt quite regonize it.

So the book is chugging along. Im on pace to have this done for early march. Crazily I keep adding pages to this story. The first sequence keeps growing and growing. I think its very natural though and will add a lot of emotion and resonance with what happens later in the book hopefully.

So yes, this is a small post. Assured Im very busy and working the comic over. Im hoping to start posting more, maybe get my warm up drawings on here. We'll find out together intrepid viewer. See ya soon!

Sandor Clegane, the Hound

So I've not been idle this whole time between posts. I've been working on my next book Jim and Jenn. Its gonna be a ninety page mean machine, Im on a strict schedule for it, minimum two pages a week. It will be for sure ready for TCAF http://www.torontocomics.com/ this year. I've also applied for the Stumptown festival in April, http://www.stumptowncomics.com/ Im hopefull I'll have it done by then but no promises. I am super excited about hitting the west coast though, watch for me!This is another in my series of ASOIAF pinups. This is Sandor Clegane, hes a wicked character. Goerge RR Martin does a fantastic job of building up these evil characters then making them sympathetic over time. Again do yourself a favour and read these books...theyre sweet! Also, next weekend, c'mon down to the Comic book shoppe http://www.thecomicbookshoppe.com/ in Ottawa, I'll be doing the 24 hour comic challenge there http://www.24hourcomicsday.com/. Love to see you out. Also look for a post of that in the next couple weeks.Word on the Street was a few weeks ago. It was wicked, if you stopped by, thanks for doing so, it was great to meet you! Cant wait for next year, it was a great show and lots of fun. Directly after Word on the Street there was the street fighter tribute launch party, there was a sweet party and a SF tournament. I got into the final eight but ended up getting smoked by some Blanka using dude. What a jerk. Anyways, hope you like the drawing. See ya soon. Happy Thanksgiving!

Where I've been and what Im doing.

So its been a month since I've last updated. Believe I've not been idle. So yeah, I've decided as per a few posts ago my next project is the head blowing up comic, now tentativlly retitled Jim and Jenn. Its now going to be a ninety page retooled mean machine. I've been on a 2 page a week schedule for a while now and moving along. Some of the old pages are going to be retained but its mostly going to be brand new. The book will be released in May is the plan, just in time for TCAF. Also I've decided to stop posting pages online, this may change like the seasons, but for now this is your last look till completion. Theres a lot of surprises and changes in store. So yes Im super pumped about this book, stick with me and watch for it!
So untill then Im just going to be posting pinups and various other ventures. There is a 24 hour comic challenge coming up, so before the end of the month you can all expect to see a serious update..
Also word on the street was fantastic. Those I met and sketched for, thanks for stopping by! I had a great time! See you there next year with Jim and Jenn.

Catelyn Stark and Summer

As I posted previously Im currently reading a series of books by Goerge RR Martin called "A song of ice and fire". These are two characters from that series, The Lady Catelyn Tully Stark and her son Bran's direwolf Summer. I really cant say enough about this series, its continuing to kick my ass. Im into the fourth book now about halfway through. I Know Im gonna be pretty sad once its done. I understand there were five years between part three and four..

In other news Fanexpo has come and gone. It was a good convention, I missed a lot of it as I was at my brothers bachelor party but Julie filled in for me very well. I met a lot of nice people did a lot of fun sketchs and sold a few books as well, so a good time for sure. Theres a con report I found online that guest stars me if you wanna take a look it can be found here http://krisabel.ctv.ca/blog/_archives/2008/8/22/3851036.html

So the next place you can find me will be at the word on the street. http://www.thewordonthestreet.ca/toronto/home.asp Hopefully if you didnt make it to paradise or hobbystar I'll see you there. Still plenty of stickers and books to still be had!

Hope you like the drawing!

Autobile comics and Leo

so I did these two comics at work last week. Playing around with different formats and genres is interesting. Comedies tough, as you can see Im not SGR or PBF yet. Also I need a title for these things. I thought Autobile {instead of autobio, Ive since been told that that is retarded..} any suggestions help!
So Yeah Im hoping to continue to come up with high brow fodder for more strips while Im work. Then put them together at a kinkos for the cons so I have something other than just Lucy Legacy at my table. P.S LL is going to print very shortly, theres a lot of wicked extras in there for those who have read it online, like the first 12 pages completly redone and looking sick. This is the summer of Lucy, shes going to take this city over, watch for it!
And last but not least my main hombre Leo. This dude has got his shit on lockdown yo! Long time followers of my blog will remember me talking about a portfolio I was putting together for the TMNT's studio mirage. I think its now safe to say two years later that I havent done much on that lately..ha.

Could be another 15- 20 pages. Im focusing on this book though now that all the redos for Lucy Legacy are done. IM hoping to have it done before the summer. Got new things I want to get to after all... If you forget where we are in this story you can find your way with....
